Without evidence of benefit, an intervention should not be presumed to be beneficial or safe.

Using the Sandy Hook Shooting to Preach

There is still a lot that we do not know about why Mr. Lanza apparently shot a bunch of children and adults.

There are plenty of profiteers out there making claims about the cause of this shooting.

Evidence?

No. They just have emotion.

Newtown school shooting story already being changed by the media to eliminate eyewitness reports of a second shooter

This is from Mike Adams, conspiracy theorist and alternative medicine pusher. Any coincidence must be proof of a conspiracy if he can come up with a way of making the coincidence fit his dogma.

Gun control? We need medication control! Newton elementary school shooter Adam Lanza likely on meds; labeled as having ‘personality disorder’

The same Mike Adams delivers a second ridiculous scare story, using the deaths of 20 children to make money.

Does Mike Adams have any proof of anything.

No.

One thing that we can count on is that Mike Adams will make claims based on opinion, rather than evidence. If we want to know the truth of something, the opposite of what Mike Adams states is much more likely to be the truth.

For example, his web site states that his most viewed story is –

Colorado Batman shooting shows obvious signs of being staged

Don’t think.

Don’t ask for evidence.

Just let Mad Mike manipulate your emotions to sell his products.

Another Mike is claiming that the Constitution is the problem. We need to have the government start preaching his religion to children in schools to prevent school shootings.

We ask why there’s violence in our schools, but we have systematically removed God from our schools. Should we be so surprised that schools would become a place of carnage? Because we’ve made it a place where we don’t want to talk about eternity, life, what responsibility means, accountability.[1]

There is a reason for the First Amendment, but some people want the government to promote their religion. There is also a reason for the Second Amendment. Some people like one, but not the other and are willing to tear up the parts of the Constitution they do not like.

The Constitution is supposed to protect unpopular minorities from the abuses of the majority.

The term tyranny of the majority was used to describe this abuse of minorities by majorities.

We need to protect the Constitution from opportunists who would take advantage of temporary popular pressure to eliminate Constitutional protections they do not like.

There are plenty of other claims about the causes of this shooting. They are as biased as the claims already mentioned.

This is nothing new. H.L. Mencken described similar hucksterism almost a century ago –

Civilization, in fact, grows more and more maudlin and hysterical; especially under democracy it tends to degenerate into a mere combat of crazes; the whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, most of them imaginary.

and –

Explanations exist; they have existed for all time; there is always a well-known solution to every human problem — neat, plausible, and wrong.

What do the police investigating the shooting say?

“Our investigators at the crime scene … did produce some very good evidence in this investigation that our investigators will be able to use in, hopefully, painting the complete picture as to how – and more importantly why – this occurred,” Connecticut State Police Lieutenant Paul Vance told a news conference.[2]

The police are telling us that they are still learning about what happened.

The people who claim to have the answers keep repeating their biases without any evidence.

  1. If you’re going to post something about this, at least try to get the name right. It doesn’t help your credibility to mangle the name of the school.
