Without evidence of benefit, an intervention should not be presumed to be beneficial or safe.

Not Doing “Something” Is Giving Up!

In the comments to Most Survive with Mystery Treatment for Cardiac Arrest – Comments from Christopher, there is an essential point made by the very same Christopher, who writes My Variables Only Have 6 Letters.

It is crazy how after 10 minutes people go into a “let’s try anything” mode! Why? We have pretty dismal resuscitation rates with that sort of mentality…It’s almost like they feel like they’re giving up if they’re not doing “something”.

There is no As if about it.

I have discussed patient care with plenty of people with this attitude.

We would never do anything to harm the patient!

Therefore, anything we do is beneficial!

Further therefore, if we aren’t doing something we are depriving patients of benefit!

I would accept that they would never intentionally do anything to harm the patient if . . .

They would intentionally learn more about what is good patient care.

I sometimes stand at the back of Dr. Bledsoe’s presentations and listen to what people say as they leave. Often, the sentiment expressed is that paying attention to Dr. Bledsoe would kill patients.

Even though all of the research supports Dr. Bledsoe.

These something is always better than nothing people claim that they know more than Dr. Bledsoe, because they just know!

They are sure, because that’s the way they’ve always done it!

This way of thinking is the triumph of wishful thinking over reality.

This way of thinking is completely wrong.

In too many places, this way of thinking is called EMS.

Even in EMS, ignorance kills.
